Future imaginaries in the making and governing of digital technology: Multiple, contested, commodified

Visions of the future are omnipresent in current debates about digital transformation. This introductory article and full special issue concerned with function, power, performativity visions how they relate to making governing technology. Revisiting existing concepts, we particularly discuss advance concept sociotechnical imaginaries. In difference ephemeral partisan ideas, imaginaries collectively held institutionally stabilized. Nonetheless, hold that multiple, contested, commodified rather than monolithic, linear trajectories enacted by state actors. Introducing summarizing articles issue, conclude increasingly dominated technology companies not only take over imaginative power shaping society, but also partly absorb public institutions’ ability govern these very futures their rhetoric, technologies, business models.
